Meal Prepared and Served by the St. Matthew’s Grief Support Group

Jeanie Miley is a writer and columnist, a retreat leader and speaker on topics of spiritual growth and wholeness. She is the author of six books and has written a weekly newspaper column, "Growing Edges," for twenty-five years. Presently, she is writing columns for two websites. Since 1971, Jeanie has been fascinated by the integration of psychology and spirituality, forming a deep belief that religious practice or dogma means nothing unless it makes a difference in the everyday life of the individual and in personal relationships. One of the most frequently heard comments about Jeanie's teaching and writing is that it is "practical, meeting everyday needs of persons of all ages."

Thursday, March 29
12:05 - 12:35 p.m. Lenten Sacred Concert in Sanctuary

Soloists of St. Matthew's, Jim Henderson, Acting Director of Music; Diana Brown - soprano; Erin Huddle - mezzo-soprano; David Lee - tenor; Jack Byrom - baritone.

One of the most important historical periods in sacred vocal music is the era commonly referred to as "the Renaissance," a period that stretches from roughly 1400-1600 A.D. Much of the music of this time was sung, and was sung a cappella in a cathedral or church setting. Composers such as Palestrina, Byrd, Gibbons, Tallis, and many others set the liturgy of the church to extremely beautiful music. Please join us as the St. Matthew's Vocal Ensemble presents an offering of sacred motets from this era, as well as some solo pieces from more modern times.

Soloists of St. Matthew's are all students in The School of Music at The University of Texas at Austin:

Diana Brown, soprano, is a sophomore Choral Studies major and aspires to continuing her studies at the Masters and Doctorate level in Choral Conducting. Her career as a choral conductor will be at the collegiate and professional level. Diana was born and raised in Fayetteville, Arkansas where she is a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church. She has been singing in Episcopal choirs since third grade and is delighted to be a member of the choir of St. Matthew's.

David Lee, tenor, is currently completing a Bachelor of Music Degree in Choral Music Studies. This will be the last semester of his Junior year at the University of Texas at Austin. He is originally from Ft. Worth, TX, and intends to become a choral conductor of secondary and university level ensembles.

Erin Huddle is a 21 year old Senior pursuing a Bachelor of Music degree in Vocal Performance. She is from Belton, Texas. Erin will be graduating in the fall, and plans to open a private studio in her home to teach voice lessons, and eventually get a Master's in Vocal Pedagogy.

Jack Byrom is a sophomore where he is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Business Administration from the McCombs School of Business. Jack, a graduate of Westwood High School here in Austin, is an active participant in the UT Chamber Singers and Longhorn Singers and periodically participates in other School of Music programs. He hopes to one day go to law school and start a family here in Austin. He also hopes to stay at St. Matthews, where he has been attended since high school.

Jim Henderson is a doctoral student in choral conducting at the University of Texas here in Austin. He received his master's degree from UT (choral conducting) in the fall of 2006. He is also a graduate of Oklahoma Baptist University, where he studied conducting under Dr. Michael Cox. Mr. Henderson was director of music at the First Presbyterian Church of Irving, Texas from 1989 until 2004. He also was the musical director of the Deep Ellum Chorus in Dallas, Texas from 1992-1993. In addition to his responsibilities at St. Matthew's, Jim directs the UT Women's Chorus, which he has done since the fall of 2004.
