The schedule may change over the summer or holidays.
Sunday Rector's Forum begins August 17, 2008
except for the:
Living What We Believe Class and
The Sunday Morning Adult Bible Class
which both continue to meet for the summer.
Living What We Believe Class - B-6
Continues to meet in summer
Each week we read the Gospel
assigned in the Book of Common Prayer for each Sunday according to the Church
year and we attempt to recognize how it applies to our daily life. It is
amazing how the insight of one person's experience stimulates the lives of
others in the class. This small group discussion is lively and
sometimes very moving. The class is open to all and you don't have to
attend each class to benefit from our discussions. Come join
us.
The Sunday Morning Adult Bible Class – B-21
Continues to meet in summer
In March of 2008 our class begins a study of the last book in the Bible, The Revelation. As is our custom, we will use a discussion format with a group leader to guide us. Before beginning, it would probably be helpful for as many of us as possible to read The Revelation completely through, as if receiving a letter from someone. Other advance reading on the topic is encouraged, but not at all required. There are lots of interpretations of this book. In our discussions, we will endeavor to get a good view of the forest without being distracted by all the trees. Please join us in Room B21.
Sunday Rector’s Forum – Huffman Hall – 9:15 AM
August 17: A yearning to be understood and to understand
In the daily sprint we call life, our relationships and self-respect suffer. We develop a “public self” to get along in the world, to get our “work” done and to be approved of by others. Rarely does this “public self” reveal our “true self” to anyone, even those we know well. In this class, The Rev.. Merrill Wade will draw on the Holy Scriptures and the work of Thomas Merton to encourage us all to live a more authentic life.
August 24: A yearning to know and do what is good and right
In a world of competing interests and constant busyness, we are often confused about what is good and right in any given moment. Moreover, all too often, when we believe we know what we should do or what we should not do, we cannot bring ourselves to do the thing that is good or right. Discernment and self-control involve more than will power. In this class, The Rev. Merrill Wade will draw on the Holy Scriptures and the work of modern authors to give insights into this daily struggle.
August 31: A yearning for perspective and acceptance of life
At times, we look in the mirror and wonder what difference our lives are making. The truth is that we cannot know for sure. The worth of our lives are not ours, ultimately, to judge. In this class, we will examine ways that the life and teaching of Jesus and subsequent Christian tradition encourage us to trust that God will provide the wisdom we need for daily living. In addition, that the meaning of our life, indeed our salvation, is a gift to be revealed, received and accepted, and not earned.
September 7, 14 and 21: Going Deeper
In this three-week period, The Rev. Wade will give a 15-20 minute talk on the themes of the first three weeks of classes and then invite small group table conversation using a brief study guide prepared for each class.
Resumption of Multiple Sunday Morning Adult Classes on September 7:
On September 7, most of the classes from last spring are continuing, including a Discovery Class for those to be confirmed or received, that will be held on Sunday mornings at 9:15 AM. More details will be forthcoming.
